Evolution or Transform of Ganda Baja:
Summary
Folk is the original raw form of emotion, knowledge, experiment and human value of a common people which passes from generation to generation in the form of Folklore, Folk story and Folk Music. Folk Music and Dance is a deep source of culture which flow from generation to generation.
Ganda Baja is the identification of Gand people. Like every civilization in the socio-economic, cultural and political life of Ganda people we can see the transformation. We can see great changes in the lifestyle of people. We all already forgot and going to forget our cultural values. Ganda Baja is the root of western odisha’s rich cultural heritage. But now this culture also lost a number of art form from the dictionary of Ganda Baja. A number of art form is going to be died very soon. Socio-Economic Cultural and Political diplomacy is behind this.
In the above picture we can find the differences. A number of Transformations in the name of improvement and entertainment is the root cause behind these changes.
In the above image the number one Dhol is revised Ganda Baja Dhol, where the second one is the Dhol use for Mahoswav and Studio Recording. The Third Dhol is used for Events and Bhajan programme or the improvised instrument, where the fourth one is the synthetic dhol used by Dulduli Baja.
Lisan:
Here we can see the transform of Lisan from the beginning period to recent period. According to the studies in the invention of Lisan it is clear that first Timidi type instrument a shape of half cut watermelon made from mud covered with calf skin was in use. This instrument was play with bamboo stick or wood stick. Later there was a development in the size and making. This was quite strong and finished than first one. In this second image we can see that the Timkidi is quite advanced. In the later period to bring a stong bass sound they use Rubber Stick instead of Stick or bamboo stick. But this was not last for a long period. The mud plate was the reason behind this. Later they use Iron Plate instead of mud pot. They now increase the size of the instrument and used the buffalo skin instead of cowhide to produce big bass sound.
Tasa:
According to the studies it is found that the before Tasa in Ganda Baja Dhapda was in used. The shape of the Wood was not proper round in shape. They make this instrument and attached the cow skin with the support of wood stick nail. After that they used round shaped wood and cover with this with calf skin and made a balance with cowhide. Then they introduced Nagra for some year which was made from mud covered with calf skin. After a long period of time they used flatten type water melon cut pot to bring treble sound.
Muhuri:
Muhuri is the bowing wind instrument in Ganda Baja, control over the changes in music and rhythm. Playing of Muhuri is not so easy. Controlling over breath and playing the music vibration is the important for a Muhuria. Muhuria can’t get opportunity to take breath. If he will pause a bit to take breath the process of Ganda Baja music will be stopped. So before playing muhuri it is very necessary to take reasonable exercise. Muhuri playing is not so easy and even the making of Muhuri instrument is very rare, that cause absent of Muhuri in Ganda Baja regularly. The easiest way to produce bowing sound create by synthesizer cause a great influence over the Muhuri.
Jhanh or Kastaal:
Jhanj or Kas Taal produces percussion sound. It plays an important role in the Ganda Baja music. In the beginning period percussion instrument was not in use. Dhol, Lisan and Tasa were the leading instrument in Ganda Baja music. But there was a gap in the music. To fulfill this gap they think to add an instrument to produce a full count percussion play on beat. First they used broken mud pot or stone pieces to produce and sound. Surprisingly two piece of mud piece play in support finger. This process was not success. Later they use small stone pieces in a box which produce best percussion sound. They now want to replace stone pieces and used Kaudi or Gunj to produce percussion sound.
Later Kathi or stick was used to give extra percussion effect in Ganda Baja.
Ghungura: It is one type of bell that associates with goddess. It matches with rhythms and produce streaming sound. In the old days Jhumka was use by Ganda Baja musician. Dhulia wear Ghungura or in his wrist at the time of performance. Later this was replace by Jhumka and Jhanj or Kastaal
Tamkidi: Timkidi a tiny one sided drum 6" in diameter played by two sticks. This was the primitive instrument which one was played with Ganda Baja music. In course of time the uses of Timkidi got out from the list of Ganda Baja music.
